Laser hair removal, once limited to patients with dark hair, can now be effectively performed on blonde facial hair with the assistance of a topical melanin solution. According to Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, of Washington, DC, this enhanced clinical method offers promise to patients with fair hair who hope to take advantage of the long-lasting benefits of laser hair removal. In the pilot study, 11 patients with lair skin and blonde or nonpigmented facial hair applied the topical melanin-encased solution to their cheeks twice a day for 2 weeks prior to laser treatment. One side of the face was treated with a long-pulsed 755 nm alexandrite laser, and the other side of the face was treated with a long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. Three consecutive treatments were delivered to each patient at 4-week intervals.

Press, 2002. Pp. 523. Appendices. Illustrations. Index. References. Cloth, $39.95. This exhaustive study of Kalamazoos automobile industry includes an introduction, thirty chapters, an epilogue, and a forty-eight-page technical delineation of the cars built in that city between 1902 and 1982. The reader learns in the introduction that the book will treat the history of automobile manufacturing in Kalamazoo and the story of “automobiling” in and around Kalamazoo, thus the books title. Seventeen makes of cars and trucks are considered in detail, from the Barley to the Wolverine. Unfortunately, the volume also includes irrelevant chapters on the Kalamazoo Rail and Velocipede Company, chapters treating automobile manufacturing in Vicksburg, south of Kalamazoo, in Allegan, to the north, and a lengthy (eighty-six pages), detailed discussion of the bankruptcy hearings for the Michigan Buggy Company and subsequent criminal trials. Several chapters seriously consider “automobiling” and in many respects are the most valuable part of the book. Chapter 2, “The Horseless Carriage Arrives in Kalamazoo,” identifies the first forty-six cars in the city by nameplate and more importantly lists the owners and their occupations. A later chapter, “Automobiling,” presents an overview of the challenges of owning and driving an automobile in western Michigan during the first decade of the twentieth century. In 1914 Kalamazoo hosted the first one-hundred-mile automobile race in Michigan at its county fair grounds, and Lyon devotes an entire chapter to this event. There is also a chapter on the performance of a Kalamazoo-built car, the Cornelian, at the Indianapolis 500 race in 1914. With Louis Chevrolet at the wheel, it finished twentieth. Lyons work reminds both “car nuts” and serious automotive historians that Kalamazoo had a long history of automobile and truck manufacturing, beginning with Clarence and Maurice Blood, who produced the first automobile in this city in June 1902. The Checker Cab Company, which assembled cabs in Kalamazoo from 1923 through 1982, was easily the citys most successful automobile manufacturer. The remaining firms had typical life spans of three to five years. One chapter of this book, “Rumors, Dreams and Great Expectations,” contains brief histories of failed companies that produced fewer than ten cars. Although the author decided against using traditional notes for documentation, the “Chapter References” supplied at the end of each chapter follow the order of the text, so the reader can link most of the book with the sources used.

hypnotherapy phobias

Hypnotherapy may offer patients 1-5 years of relief from the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, reported Dr. Wendy M. Gonsalkorale and her colleagues at the University Hospital of South Manchester (England).
Sunday edition of Britains tabloid newspaper features articles on news and sports, plus celebrity gossip, regular columnists and opinion.
Morgan D. (1996). The principles of hypnotherapy. Bradford UK: Eilidon Press. The book is divided into three parts. Part A consisting of 9 chapters covers foundational material on systems theory and how that can be applied to organic systems and to hypnosis. It discusses positive feedback loops that amplify the process and negative feedback loops that subdue the process. Positive feedback amplification can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether increasing the effect is desired, while negative feedback calming can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether decreasing the effect is desired. Morgan focuses on the activity of a system, the activity of its component subsystems, or the activity of the supersystem of which the system is a component. His main theoretical focus is on whether the activity of the system is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same, as other components change in specified ways. Hypnosis is described in systems terms, not as a “state,” but rather in terms of what system or subsystem components are changed, either increased or decreased, during trance induction, deepening, maintenance, trance work, and termination. He uses simple symbols to represent activities in quasi-mathematical style, which is helpful. Some of the letter symbols are used for different activities in different parts of the book. It would have been easier to follow if given letter symbols had been used more consistently to represent single specific activities. Some of his textual references to others publications are found in the bibliography at the end of the book, but some are unfortunately not present in the bibliography. He goes through common hypnotic tests in Chapter 8 and inductions in Chapter 9 explaining them in systems terms. This does produce some greater conceptual clarity with respect to subsystem component activities during hypnosis. Part B consisting of 6 chapters is the central discussion on what the systems approach can teach us about hypnotherapy. Chapter 10 discusses the matter of diagnosis in systems terms looking at precursors, problems, and resultants, and how they change with respect to one another. Chapter 11 focuses on positive and negative feedback loops in organic systems including behavioral, emotive, and cognitive. The vicious circle is a positive feedback loop with harmful consequences. Thinking in systems terms may make needed changes clearer to the therapist. Chapter 12 looks at the consequences of symptom reduction. The remaining three chapters in this part examine making changes by choosing the appropriate positive feedback loops to amplify desired effects and the appropriate negative feedback loops to quiet undesired effects, planning the changes, and reinforcing the changes by selecting natural reinforces. Part C further develops aspects of the systems approach to hypnosis and is comprised of 10 chapters. Topics here include dynamic rebound in paired systems, dissociation, and a systems analysis of indirect questions. Experimentation based on systems theory is discussed, and family therapy and schools of psychotherapy are cataloged from a systems analysis viewpoint. The abstract dynamic patterns of analogies and metaphors are also analyzed from a systems viewpoint, while consciousness is approached from a supersystem vantage point. Finally, the mathematics of linear equations is applied as a reasonable approximation of activity in positive and negative feedback loops, so long as the numbers are reasonably small.

Among elementary and middle-school populations, girls play for an average of about 5.5 hours/week and boys average 13 hours/week. Playing games is not limited to adolescent boys. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that several companies are now designing video game consoles for preschoolers. Preschoolers aged two to five play an average of 28 minutes/day. The amount of time spent playing video games is increasing, but not at the expense of television viewing which has remained stable at about 24 hours/week. Similar to earlier studies about television, the data about childrens video game habits are correlated with risk factors for health and with poorer academic performance. When video game play is analyzed for violent content, additional risk factors are observed for aggressive behavior and desensitization to violence. Video games are natural teachers. Children find them highly motivating: by virtue of their interactive nature. children are actively engaged with them: they provide repeated practice: and they include rewards for skillful play. These facts make it likely that video games could have large effects, some of which are intended by game designers, and some of which may not be intended. Video games have been shown to teach children healthy skills for the self-care of asthma and diabetes, and have been successful at imparting the attitudes, skills, and behaviors that they were designed to teach. In a study with college students, playing a golf video game improved students actual control of force when putting, even though the video game gave no bodily feedback on actual putting movement or force. There have even been studies with adults showing that experience with video games is related to better surgical skills. Research also suggests that people can learn iconic, spatial, and visual attention skills from video games.

Unlike the quiet street below, the sky over 10th Street is full of traffic. Not airplane traffic, more like cabinet traffic. It is there that finished cabinet after finished cabinet makes the short journey from an assembly and finishing facility to the warehouse where they will wait in a queue of 100,000 cabinets-in-inventory for orders that come in from wholesale distributors around the country. These “floating” cabinets are produced by the cabinet manufacturer Kitchen Kompact. The company is a stock producer of cabinets - lots and lots of cabinets.Located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky., in 600,000 square feet of converted government buildings, Jeffersonville, Ind.-based Kitchen Kompact, known as KK, is an anomaly in the cabinet industry, and a very successful anomaly, at that. There are a number of things that set the family-run cabinet company apart from its competition - from its business philosophy to the familys ownership of a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course which will host a PGA championship in 1996. But the biggest distinction between KK and its competitors is that it concentrates its time on assembly and finishing and supplying the biggest segment of consumer demand, while leaving other manufacturers to pick up the rest of the cabinet market. On top of that the company keeps a huge inventory so it can deliver its products quickly.Company President Dwight Gahm purchased Kitchen Kompact in 1955. At the time, KK was a small custom cabinet shop in Louisville, Ky., that had been in business since 1937. Gahm had no experience in the cabinet industry, having previously co-owned a diaper service. But he did bring ideas to the cabinet industry that he developed during his diaper business day. Ideas such as efficiency of production, getting employees involved and motivated, keeping debt to a minimum, and selling the product at a fair price.
The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Ass.s monthly Trend of Business Survey reported that cabinet sales in December improved by 9.5%, holding strong after two months of double-digit growth.

If he was a plumber, though, what manner of plumber would David Cameron be? The Tory leader, summoned via the Yellow Pages to fix a problem with your boiler. You would let him in, I think. Nice face, easy manner. Theres a problem with your boiler, he would say. I will, says David the plumber, but not yet. First, I am going to set up a series of Boiler Review Groups. Some of these will be headed by really quite surprising people who have been harping on about boilers for years. They will look into the problem in depth, and then they will propose a series of solutions. Fine, you might say, boilers not being your personal forte. And then youll fix it? David the plumber might give a little chuckle. You know the one? That plumber chuckle? I will, hed repeat, but not yet. I mean, lets be clear. These wont be my proposals for boiler repair. Far from it! Some of them will be frankly quite outlandish. So before committing myself to any particular course of action, I would prefer to float them all in the public domain, possibly by means of leaks. Hahaha, youd say, dutifully, but then David the plumber would cock his head slightly, puzzled, and youd realise it couldnt have been a deliberate pun after all. This might make you feel a little tired. So you would gather yourself for one final push. And afterwards, youd say, you will fix it? Right?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The amount of water on planet Earth has not changed in the last two billion years - but in the last century, water use increased at twice the rate of the world population. The United States flushes 6.8 billion gallons of water down the toilet every day, while more than half of our states anticipate freshwater shortages in the next 10 years. These are just a few of the facts plumbers learned when they attended one of the workshops held in California this fall to introduce the new GreenPlumbers[R] program. The program, which originated in Australia in 2001, is giving plumbers a new image - and a new mission. “Plumbers have long held their mission to be protecting the health of the country,” said Stephen Lehtonen, spokesperson for GreenPlumbersUSA. “Because of climate change and global warming, our new mission is to protect the resources of the planet by training plumbers to be advocates and educators in environmental protection and conservation.” Lehtonen facilitated a 15-year agreement that allows the enormously successful and effective GreenPlumbers[R] training program of Australia to be implemented in the United States. “GreenPlumbers[R] is an accreditation program that trains plumbers in water conservation and climate care issues,” Lehtonen said. “The program is designed to help save water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” Intended as a comprehensive industry response to climate and water care issues, the program is open to all plumbers, regardless of affiliation or association membership. GreenPlumbers[R] has developed a five-course accreditation that totals 32 hours of training. The courses are Climate Care, Caring For Our Water, Solar Hot Water, Water-Efficient Technology, and Inspection Report Service. Training workshops debuted in California this fall. The response from attending plumbers and contractors has been very positive. After being trained in Caring for Our Water and Climate Care classes, attendees commented: “Very overdue education. Thank God its here now,” and, “Conserving water and utilizing the new technology will help save my clients money and build my companys reputation.” The response from government agencies and conservation groups has also been enthusiastic. “This is a great idea,” said Karen Morvay, water conservation specialist at the Santa Clara Valley Water District. “With the direct contact plumbers make each day with residents, I cant imagine a better spokesperson for energy and water use efficiency.”

Being Bullied

Daily newspaper from Salt Lake City, Utah was first published in 1850. Articles cover local news, business and entertainment.
ABSTRACT Workplace bullying is a phenomenon that is attracting increasing interest from researchers throughout the Western world. To date, most of the research into workplace bullying has focused on managers and colleagues as the perpetrators of bullying in the workplace. By contrast, little is known about upwards bullying, where managers are the targets. We argue that in order to more fully understand workplace bullying as a whole, the phenomenon of upwards bullying requires research attention. In the present study, upwards bullying was explored in interviews conducted with 24 managers from public and private organizations, with the data coded and arranged thematically. Results indicate that potential contributing factors towards upwards bullying include the current work environment, change within organizations and power issues. We recommend that organizations identify the occurrence and processes of upwards bullying as important steps in developing comprehensive workplace bullying policies. Keywords: power; upwards bullying; workplace abuse; workplace bullying Despite an increase in research into workplace bullying in recent decades, the major focus has been on downwards bullying with some recent attention on horizontal bullying (Lewis Sheehan 2003). Thus, relatively little is known about managers who are bullied by their staff, a process described as upwards bullying within this paper, and why this form of bullying occurs. While it is legitimate that the predominant focus of research has been on managers as the perpetrators of workplace bullying (British studies have consistently found those in superior positions to be perpetrators of workplace bullying - Zapf, Einarsen, Hoel Vartia 2003), we contend that, in order to fully understand the broad phenomenon of workplace bullying, upwards bullying requires our attention. Such a focus has potential to impact on our theoretical understanding of workplace bullying, and to highlight important recommendations for managers, staff and organizations. Despite limited usage of the term upwards bullying (Lewis Sheehan 2003; McCarthy, Henderson, Sheehan Barker 2002; Rayner Cooper 2003), there does appear to be general agreement in the literature that managers can indeed be the targets of workplace bullying from their staff (e.g. Zapf et al. 2003). For example, Hoel, Cooper and Faragher (2001) found in their study of the impact of organizational status and workplace bullying that 6.7% of respondents had been bullied by staff. Furthermore, prevalence studies into workplace bullying have identified the occurrence of upwards bullying as between 2% and 27%, with a mean of 11% (see Zapf et al. 2003). However, cases of upwards bullying are reported in the literature rarely (Rayner Cooper 2003) and are often presented anecdotally or as single cases (see Braverman 1999, for example).
Bullies! Dont you detest their hurtful attitude and taunting language? Dont you abhor how bullying makes the victims feel? Bullying has occurred throughout the generations and in all kinds of societies. Even animals can be said to bully one another - birds have a pecking order and wolf packs will shun individuals. Slavery can be considered the most egregious form of bullying, and even the corporate world includes bullying. Often, minorities and women are excluded from high-ranking positions. Some bosses bully subordinates; coworkers may bully associates to make themselves feel important. Although there are many facets of bullying, this article focuses on varying measures of dealing with bullies at the early childhood level. Dictionary.com defines a bully as “[a] person who is habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people.” The Gale Encyclopedia of Childhood and Adolescence (1998) identifies the bully as “[a]n aggressive child who repeatedly victimizes a less powerful child with physical and/or emotional abuse.” Olweus (1993) describes bullying as “exposure, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions (words, physical contact, making faces, gesturing, or intentional exclusion from a group) on the part of one or more other students” (p. 9). Trawick-Smith (2006) classifies bullying as “proactive aggression that has no clear goal and is often displaced and hostile in intent” (p. 313). Even the definition from what is considered the first modern American dictionary (Webster, 1828) uses explicit language in characterizing a bully as “[a] noisy, blustering overbearing fellow, more distinguished for insolence and empty menaces, than for courage, and disposed to provoke quarrels.” Bullying, in the context of children, generally involves one or more larger or older children subjugating a defenseless youngster who is incapable of protecting him/herself. Warner and Sower (2005) state that bullies often are reacting to a kind of bias or diversity issue when they beset others. The target frequently possesses a characteristic that is “different” and that provides a supposed rationale for the attack; for example, freckles or an unusual name can incite an assault. According to Hendrick (2003), bullying encompasses varying types of verbal behavior, such as mockery, derision, insults, and threats. This vocal harassment causes emotional distress and poignant anguish. Verbalized bullying is often accompanied by physical harm, which can range from mild contact to, in the most extreme cases, even death. The most accepted definition of bullying is the one offered by Dan Olweus, a recognized expert on the topic of bullying: “aggressive behavior that (a) is intended to cause harm or distress, (b) occurs repeatedly over time, and (c) occurs in an association in which there is an imbalance of power or strength” (Fleming Towey, 2002, p. 6).

The Insurance industry covers establishments that collect premiums in exchange for providing financial benefits in the event of loss or injury. Many insurance companies specialize in insuring against a specific type of loss. Common forms of insurance include life, health and medical, home and property, workers compensation, automobile, retirement, and title insurance. The industry also covers reinsurance, the practice of insurance companies assuming risk for other insurers. In addition to providers of insurance services, the industry includes brokers and agents that negotiate policies between clients and insurance companies, and industry support services such as independent inspectors and claims adjusters.Insurance is, by its very nature, a risky business. The industry can clearly be profitable, but the degree of profits is often impacted by outside factors that cannot be predicted or controlled. American Family Insurance Group reported a net income increase of 263 percent in 2004. The company had income of $564.4 million, up from $155.4 million in 2003. One of the major factors in the increased profit was the weather. American Family reported storm losses of about $105 million less than its projections for the year. In contrast, the company paid a record $834.9 million in storm and catastrophic losses in 2001.Over recent years, insurance companies have benefited from the comparatively low interest rate. The interest rate has started to rise, however, and the unusually high level of prepayment income that insurance companies received from their fixed income holdings in 2004 are not likely to continue. The high cost of gasoline may also be having an unexpected impact. As prices rises, motorists drive less, and therefore have fewer accidents. Drivers still need to maintain insurance coverage, but if driving decreases, the number of auto accident claims can be expected to decline as well.To remain competitive, insurance companies seek to develop new policy features for which they can charge premium rates. These premiums are often short lived, however, as competing companies quickly adopt the new features until they have essentially become standard practices. One of the biggest new life insurance features in recent years has been the “no lapse guarantee,” which ensures the payment of benefits indefinitely, as long as premiums continue to be paid. This feature has now been so widely adopted that it is no longer reasonable to charge a premium price for it. Such competitive product development makes it difficult for insurance companies to raise prices.

raised storage areas

The economics and resource utilization of global SANs are critical for storage service providers. Storage area networks (SANs) have increased the availability of data for local users. In order to extend that availability to remote users, the next stage in the development of storage networking is clear: global storage networks that distribute and share storage resources over a geographically dispersed area. The SAN is becoming a mainstream storage solution because of Fibre Channel, a high-speed connection technology that can extend up to about six miles and transmit data faster than most copper cables. Storage networking allows for campus-wide storage access and separates storage-oriented data from the LAN. Storage networking minimizes the twin pillars of low availability–the single point of failure and lack of access to data. SANs are still limited, however, to the local Fibre Channel fabric. Most enterprises would welcome the opportunity to locate storage resources where space and labor are readily available and affordable. At the same time, storage-pressed sites would welcome the ability to access unallocated storage capacity at a different site. Unfortunately, current SAN technology does not support cost-effective resource management over long distances.

new movie trailers

There really is an art to making a good — or “effective” — movie trailer. After all, a trailer can often make or break a movie, especially in an industry that depends on opening-weekend business. For example, theres little doubt that the early success of “Daredevil” was spurred by its exciting ads and TV spots. You have to wonder how another big superhero movie, “The Hulk” (due in June), will do, considering that its ad (which debuted during the Super Bowl) was even better. As some of you may have guessed, this is leading me into a recurring feature, my semi-regular critiques of the latest movie trailers, wherein I sometimes watch and grade trailers — not just for their entertainment value but also to assess how well they sell the movie theyre advertising. So heres my take on ads for some of this springs releases, and at least one of the early-summer blockbusters:

We consider the problem of optimizing the time for loading and unloading containers to and from a ship at a container terminal, where containers are required to be transported by trucks between the ship and their designated locations in the container yard. Generally speaking, a container terminal consists of the quayside, where containers are unloaded from and loaded onto ships, and the container storage yard, where containers are stored. External trucks are responsible for taking containers in and out of a container terminal. Internal trucks are responsible for transporting containers within the terminal, mainly between the container yard and the quayside. When a ship arrives at the terminal, containers are first unloaded from the ship onto the internal trucks by quay cranes. Next, the internal trucks transport the containers to their prespecified locations in the container yard. Upon arrival at the container block, a container is unloaded from the truck by a yard crane. After most of the containers have been unloaded from the ship, the outbound containers are transported from the storage yard to the quayside by those internal trucks and are loaded onto the ship by the quay cranes. Typically, several quay cranes can work in parallel to serve a ship, where each crane is designated to handle one section of the ship. To maximize the efficiency of this operation, it is important to have the turnaround time of the ship minimized. The speed of this loading/unloading operation is limited by the availability of the quay cranes and trucks. A quay crane can handle only one container at a time, and also a truck can normally only transport one container at a time. The yard cranes, on the other hand, have more capacity, and they usually spend their spare time shuffling the containers within a container block so as to reduce the loading/unloading time of the future tasks. Research related to the efficiency of container terminal operations has appeared in the literature. This includes the use of queuing models to study the utilization of container terminal capacity, see for example, Easa (1987), Daganzo (1990), and Gransberg and Basilotto (1998). It also includes the studies of operational issues such as berth allocation (Brown et al., 1997; Li et al., 1998; Lim, 1998), crane movements (Daganzo, 1989; Peterkofsky and Daganzo, 1990; Kim and Kim, 1999), storage allocation (De Castilho and Daganzo, 1993; Kim et al., 2000; Bish et al., 2001; Bish, 2003), and vehicle dispatching (Bostel and Dejax, 1998; Powell and Carvalho, 1998). Recently, Bish et al. (2001) considered a vehicle dispatching problem in a container terminal. In their model, containers are first unloaded from a ship by quay cranes following a prespecified sequence (known as “crane job sequence”). The unloaded containers are transported to their destinations in the container yard by a fleet of identical vehicles, each of which can carry one container at a time. Another set of containers are then transported from the yard by the same set of vehicles and are loaded onto the ship, also following a prespecified sequence. It is assumed that the travel times of vehicles satisfy the triangle inequality. The time that a quay crane needs to load/unload a container is assumed to be the same for all the jobs. The objective is to determine a vehicle schedule so as to minimize the makespan, i.e., the time it takes to complete the entire loading/unloading operation for the ship. They developed optimal and heuristic solution procedures for solving this problem. They performed worst-case analysis as well as computational analysis on their heuristic method for the single quay crane case of the problem. Their computational analysis is further extended to the multiple quay crane case. In this paper, we build on the work of Bish et al. (2001). We relax the assumption that the loading and unloading time of container is the same for all the jobs. In the presence of a single crane, we present an optimal algorithm which is efficient for small problems. For large problems, we provide a lower bound procedure as well as heuristics with favorable worst-case error bound and fast asymptotic convergence. Our analyses for the single crane case are supported by extensive computational experiments on randomly generated problems.

Immigration
Introduction: Citizenship and International Migration As there are various forms and types of international migration, there is a corresponding variety of statuses of immigrants and hence citizenships. (1) For instance, regarding the relationship between citizen status and immigration, Baubock historically categorizes three typologies, namely dependent immigration, colonizing immigration and citizen immigration (Baubock, 1991: 26-32). In dependent immigration, the immigrants lack the right to immigrate and settle in the country for an extended period. In most cases of dependent immigration, neither the sending country nor the receiving country entitles individuals the rights of immigration, but when they enter the receiving state, for instance as guest workers, these immigrants find themselves under a reduced citizenship status within the new countrys legal and political system. In colonizing immigration, the sovereignty of the country of immigration is severely restricted by the country of emigration, as in the colonization schemes of sub-Saharan Africa. In citizen immigration, individuals hold an independent right to immigrate, generally by obtaining an internationally valid passport. The countries of immigration grant these individuals immigration rights, even to people who have not been formally registered citizens before immigration. The best-known cases of such countries are Germany and Israel, both of which grant immigration rights to people who meet certain criteria of ethnic origin (Baubock, 1991: 26-32). Apart from the status of formal citizens, citizen immigration-type immigrants may be given the status of dual citizens or denizens. Dual citizenship in citizen immigration may be granted to immigrants if both of the states in question legally allow dual citizenship. Prior to recent decades, dual citizenship was generally legally prohibited by most states, and corresponding measures were taken to discourage it. Despite these international efforts to limit dual citizenship, the number of people holding more than one citizenship has climbed in recent decades, with international migration being one of the key reasons for this. The opposition to dual citizenship is rooted in conceptions of the well-ordered international world as follows: every person belongs to one and only one state; dual citizenship is to be avoided in order to protect the unity, cohesion and strength of the state; dual citizenship is incompatible with loyalty to the state; dual citizenship may cause problems in cultural and national identification; dual identifications may threaten both national unity and nations themselves; and dual citizenship threatens national security and democracy. Traditional antipathy to dual citizenship springs from a tendency to evaluate the relationship between citizens and the state from the latters point of view. From the point of view of individuals, however, it is contended that the inconveniences of dual citizenship are minimal and outweighed by its advantages (Hammar, 1989: 86-93). Another status category of immigrants in cases of citizen immigration is denizens. Citizens are members of a state who have certain rights and duties in their relationship with it. However, apart from formal citizens, there may be other individuals in the society who have rights and duties similar to those of other citizens, yet may not be endowed with formal citizenship status. In some cases, either the sending or the receiving countries may not allow dual citizenship. In order not to lose their citizenship rights in the sending country, these immigrants may opt for permanent residency. They may have the right to enter the states territory from abroad, to settle in the country, to take up work there, to receive social benefits and to vote in local elections. These “privileged non-citizens” are called, in Tomas Hammars definition, “denizens” who have certain work, residence and welfare rights just like ordinary citizens (Hammar, 1989: 83). The naturalization of denizens includes not only their reception into legal citizenship status but also contains the political, social, cultural and psychological dimensions of membership and belonging to their resident state (Hammar, 1989: 85).
